A Beachy Weekend

Now normally I am not a beach person. Give me a choice to vacay in a snowy mountain cabin somewhere or in a house on a sandy beach and I will choose the cold mountainside over the warm sunshine and cool water anytime. But a few months ago I took a beach trip with family and really enjoyed it! I loved hearing the crashing waves over and over again and the seagulls that annoy some flying above. We had an Airbnb beach house for the weekend and luckily its location was kind of private. After a long evening drive the moon practically shined down bright over the neighborhood of the small town lighting up the sandy unpaved drive perfectly helping us find our way to the place. A little crab even greeted us at the gate when carrying our luggage up and inside.

With night one down the next day started early with me and my husband taking time to drive some local back roads noticing several locals already started fishing small ponds. We made our way to Cannan Bend part of Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge and to start this off we parked to walk its trail called Hickner Bird Trail. Now to give you a heads up for what we should have been prepared for and were not the night before when we had arrived to the beach house our family had already made it and warned us they did not wait outside on the porch for us because the mosquitos were eating them alive. Well, with this in your mind no sooner had we started walking down this trail that next morning we began getting attacked. Not only this but large spiders covered the pathway stringing web from one side to the other between trees the entire way. We barely made it fifteen minutes and decided to turn around sprinting back to the car to stray away from the biting bugs also while trying to maneuver around and under the spider webs so as to not disturb any of them (nor did I want any on me). As we remained safe in the vehicle for a few moments recapping and laughing at what just happened we unparked and drove further down to where docks were where fishermen could go to sit or stand along with a small boat launch area. We parked once more afraid to get out, but I was the first to do so. To my surprise no mosquitos anywhere! I did walk out onto one of the lowered further docked piers that laid right on top of the water that terrified me when looking in and seeing nothing but pitch blackness then feeling a bump underneath. I quickly went back to the car informing my husband there were no insects to worry about and he took a travel lawn chair to a sturdier higher up dock to sit out on and chill while I remained in the car on a webinar call. Finally once all was done coffee felt well deserved so we got ourselves some and headed back to the beach house where everyone was getting ready for the beach itself and had just eaten breakfast. We quickly ate and got ready as well and headed out on the next adventure for the day.

Not taking too much time to drive to the location we were led to a beach spot of popularity. What was really neat during this time we were able to drive alongside the beach and park there right on the water. We spent all day long under a canopy, diving into waves, using a skin board to ride the short waves, and having fun. After several hours had passed we were all worn out from the suns heat we stayed in calling in food, drinking coffee from the balcony while waiting on showers, and playing trivia games laughing all night long.

The next day arrived soon meaning we had to leave but that did not mean we could not make some detours on the way out. We stopped at a small historical reenactment area down the road near the police department. Sadly no shows were scheduled but from here we went across town and over a few bridges to a large, long pier that went far out into the ocean. As we walked along the pier dolphins continuously swam by in groups or alone which was an incredible site to see. After doing this we did stop once more at a very known coffee shop, Starbucks, to grab a quick Danish treat and cooling cold coffee. All in all a great weekend getaway to the beach.

Now tell me, do you prefer the beach and heat or the mountains and cold?
