Peace

Updated: Jan 22, 2021

A professor once gave me and my classmates an assignment to think about a way we gather inner peace. What we do to clear our minds, stay calm, and what helps us think through things and get past obstacles. We were to think on this for a week and then reflect if something came up and we had to deal with it and explain how and what helped.

My answer was the open road.

The sight of the clear evening sky yesterday reminded me of this challenging assignment. Driving alone without music windows rolled down air whisking in was a way for me to find peace. The beautiful sight of the colors as the sun would set or if it was morning the way it rose. The way clouds would form and reflect the sun's shine. Watching birds fly above. Whether the weather was as clear as the evening sky as in the picture of yesterday or cloudy and rainy it always helped. Gave me time to myself to think things out, calm down, focus on what was needed, and to speak to God.

When reflecting further when I was younger before I could drive it was being outdoors in general. It could be out on the open lake sitting in a small boat fishing quietly or within a wooded forest while hiking, camping, or hunting just listening to nature around me and observing all that had been created and why. The noises of the water or wind, leaves falling around me rustling as the hit the ground, and of the woodland animals creating a peaceful atmosphere around me.

To this day I still listen to relaxing outdoor noises through an app on my phone if I am inside to help me focus when writing or for a restless night when I am unable to fall asleep. It plays rushing water within a flowing river or trickling falling rain amongst leave covered trees, adds in wolves howling or crickets chirping, even birds tweeting casually throughout. Helps me refocus to the calming memories I rely on that brings true peace to me.

Where do you find your peace?

If you are not sure or never tried to find a peaceful thing to rely on I challenge you to do so.
